UGANDA'S PARLIAMENTARIANS VISIT NCC OF TANZANIA

A delegation of 10 Uganda's Members of Parliament dealing with infrastructure development visited the National Construction Council (NCC) on 19th November 2010. This was part of their familiarization tour in which they were seeking to learn about pertinent issues regarding to infrastructure development in Tanzania.

They needed to be informed about issues on procurement procedures, roads/building works, human resource capacity in general, infrastructure projects and more important the role of National Construction Council in the development of the Construction Industry in Tanzania.

Briefing the delegates on NCC activities, Mr. Mamiro who was acting as the Chief Executive Officer gave a
summary offunctions of the Council, the achievements made and the challenges regarding the development
of the construction industry in Tanzania

He explained that NCC championed the preparation of Construction Industry Policy which was adopted by the Government in 2003.

By collaborating with stakeholders, he explained that an Implementation Action Programme for the policy
was prepared and printed in 2006 by NCe. He also revealed that NCC has been instrumental in technical audit services of construction projects in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs
which is the financier of all government projects.

He also explained about the role played by NCC in advocating transparency and fighting against corruption in the construction industry.

Mr. Mamiro further explained about the existence of Construction Industry Transparency Initiative (CoST) which has been funded by the World Bank and DFID of U.K to assist in curbing corruption and advocate transparency in the implementation of construction projects. The project is also implemented in other six (6) countries comprising of Ethiopia, Phillipines, United Kingdom, Vietnam, Malawi and Zambia.

The Ugandan delegation was impressed with NCC's activities and promised full collaboration and co- operation.

 

The Construction Industry Forum (2008) was held at Karimjee Hall - Dar es Salaam from 12th to 13th September 2008. Below is a list of papers presented.
